Real-time battles are a sight to behold indeed, but the lack of multiple tactics on the battlefield as well as occasional path-finding issues keeps the combat from reaching the heights seen in previous entries of the series.

As ambitious as the game tries to be, the size of the game creates tedium for managing larger empires, which makes smaller countries more attractive for management. Players take control of various world powers after the fracture of Alexander’s empire following his early death, leading them through military might, shrewd diplomacy, and economic prowess. Historically, Rome 2 has an incredible scope.

But does Total War: Rome 2 live up to the lofty expectations, and does it reach the heights of the series' best entry, Shogun 2?įor the most part, yes, though it is not without shortcomings. It includes the Alexander and Barbarian Invasion DLCs, and will cost £25/$30/€30.After a plethora of solid entries into the world of strategy gaming, Total War: Rome 2 arrives on the scene to make its case as the next great entry into the series long-standing lineup of tactical RTS as well as turn-based empire conquest. Rome: Remastered will be released via Steam on April 29th. And I know several people who'd argue that Rome: Total War has always been the best Total War game, although when we last ranked the series back in 2016, we weren't one of them. This is the last Total War game they'll ever play, in much the same way as there are some people who will now stick with Age Of Empires 2 Definitive Edition forever no matter how good Age Of Empires 4 is. It's a long enough list of things that I suspect there are some people for whom this is it. There's an enhanced camera, tweakable rulesets, Steam Workshop support, sixteen new playable factions, map overlays, a modern tutorial. Otherwise, the list of tweaks is long, and less focused on graphical upgrades than "hey, you can make the UI bigger now." You know, the stuff that really matters. The quality of life for all these tiny men being stabbed doesn't seem that great, honestly.
